Trracing each others' potraits with the help of the magical camera oscura.

In Cameras Oscura children work in pairs: one is the artist and the other is the model. The model sits in front of the camera; the artist stands over it, covered by black cloth. Beneath the cloth the glass surface of the camera box displays the world before the lens. A transparent film is placed over the surface, the camera is aimed and focused. Using a black marker, the artist traces the light image, following its contours, extracting its essence. This traced image serves as a negative for the next step: the transparent film is placed on light-sensitive paper and exposed to UV light. The result of this 'cyanotype' process is a portrait in white lines on a rich blue background.

In this workshop children explore the basics of photography and the relationship between produced and reproduced images.
